The Coyotes managed to make an impressive comeback late in the game, with touchdown passes on a Codee Watts-Trevor Werner connection in the fourth quarter after a 24-7 deficit, but it wasn’t enough to leave North Highlands with a win the Division V opener.
Watts finished 14-for-31 for 235 yards with three TDs, though he also gave away two interceptions. Werner caught seven passes for 115 yards and three scores, thanks in part to Highlands being able to slow down Dylan Souza, the usually effective running back who completed the night with just 12 carries and 76 yards.
It also didn’t help that Coyotes fumbled five times, losing two of them.
The Scots had a 24-7 third-quarter advantage, which was enough for the win despite the Coyotes rallying toward the end. Denair made the postseason after a one-year absence from it.
